How to keep a healthy heart

The Head of Cardiology at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, Dr. Michael Domanski wants to keep our hearts young.

Dr. Domanski, who also holds the Pfizer Chair in Cardiovascular Research, has focused his research on the prevention of “cardiovascular aging” by treating patients earlier who are at risk for heart disease (family history, smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol).

“In the lifetime of a child today, heart disease and stroke will cause more deaths than all the wars of history combined,” he stated.

By reducing these risk factors through medication, lifestyle changes and regular monitoring at an earlier age, Dr. Domanski and this colleagues aim to prevent damage to the heart before it happens. “Our goal is to develop an approach to preventing heart disease so it will no longer be a public health problem,” he explained.

Every seven minutes, a Canadian dies from heart disease or stroke. Family history of heart disease, though important, does not drive the majority of the risk of people getting the disease.
