A Unique Fundraising Event for Parkinson’s Disease
Porridge for Parkinson’s began in Vancouver in 2001. Marg Meikle, former CBC radio host, developed Parkinson’s Disease (PD) at the early age of 43 and was determined to do something to advance a cure for this progressive disease. Her symptoms were least active in the morning and with this in mind, she started a low-key breakfast event in her home to raise money for PD research. This event raised $2.3 million and spawned other similar events in Canada.
The first Porridge for Parkinson’s event in Toronto took place in 2007 and has been held biennially ever since. Featuring celebrity chefs and special guests from media and medicine, Porridge for Parkinson’s Toronto has netted more than $750.000 for Parkinson’s Disease research.
