David and Sandra Smith keep supporting vision
As a member of the Vision Campaign Cabinet, David Smith has added to the momentum of a great year by making a gift of $250,000 to the Campaign. “The more I have learned about the work that goes on at the Donald K. Johnson Eye Centre, the more I realize that it is one of the biggest and the best centres in the world,” says David.
Personal experience with the devastating effects of vision loss has also been a significant reason for David and his wife, Sandra, to learn more about vision science. “My mother had macular degeneration, and for the last 15 years of her life I saw how it affected her,” he recalls. That experience was top of his mind when he and Sandra went on a Behind the Scenes tour of the vision labs at Toronto Western Hospital in 2003. There they met some of TWH’s top vision scientists and Vision Science Research Director Dr. Martin Steinbach. It was the beginning of a relationship that saw the couple volunteering for research studies and funding young graduate students.
The Smiths’ recent gift to the Vision Science Research Program builds on a history of support in that area. “Sandy and I continue to be encouraged by the quality of work and research talent working to find a cure for vision loss,” he says.
