WHY 10,000 STEPS?

A healthier you starts with your own two feet.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, regular brisk walking for 30 minutes four to seven days a week will reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis and some cancers. In fact, 63% of Canadians are not active enough to gain the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

For the average Canadian, taking 10,000 steps a day is the equivalent to walking a distance of 8 kilometres throughout the day. In fact, 10,000 steps is the recommended daily step goal for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. A 2004 pedometer study in Sports Medicine Journal provides a guideline on how many steps are enough:

Why Walk?

…Because at least 80% of premature heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes and 40% of cancers can be prevented through healthy diet and regular physical activity.

…Because 75% of Canadian children and youth are not active enough for optimal growth and development.

…Because one-quarter of Canadians aged 2 to 17 are overweight or obese.

…Because 16 million Canadians live with a chronic disease. It is estimated that deaths from chronic disease in Canada will increase by 15% over the next ten years.
