Leading an international centre of excellence in ACHD
Dr. Erwin Oechslin has forged an internationally respected career in the treatment of patients with congenital heart disease. As Director of the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and the Bitove Family Professor in Adult Congenital Heart Disease, UHN, Dr. Oeschlin leads a team of 40 people, including physicians, nurses, other health professionals, support staff and research fellows. In fact, the ACHD program at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre is the largest and oldest centre of its kind in the world.
It was this reputation that was instrumental in Dr. Oeschlin coming to Canada to accept the directorship. Originally from Switzerland, Dr. Oechslin graduated from the University of Zurich in Switzerland. There, he completed his Masters, Residency program, Fellowship training and served in significant clinical leadership roles in Swiss hospitals for over two decades. Most recently, as a faculty member of the Division of Cardiology at University Hospital in Zurich, Dr. Oechslin was responsible for the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program and he was a staff physician of the Heart Failure and Heart Transplant Clinics, and the Echocardiography Laboratory.
Universally admired, Dr. Oechslin brings a thoughtful and pragmatic approach to the challenge of providing quality treatment for patients with adult congenital heart disease. He emphasizes the role of teamwork in providing the best care to ACHD patients. “With an integrated collaboration between all specialists involved, we will continue to lead the way in patient care, education and research,” he says.
