Event Overview

On May 3, 2011, 400 guests will gather to celebrate the arts and health sciences in a very special way.

This Gala is a joint fundraiser for the Al and Malka Artists' Health Centre at Toronto Western Hospital, the Artists' Health Centre Foundation, and the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra – both organizations dedicated to the health and success of artists in our community. The evening will feature a performance by the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, as well as appearances by other special guests from the world of the arts.

The idea for this partnership was born when Jeanne Lamon (Music Director of Tafelmusik) met with Dr. Michael Baker (Rose Family Chair in Medicine at University Health Network and Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto). They decided that the commonalities between the two organizations – dedication to excellence, leaders in their industries, and a commitment to artist health – would result in an exciting and successful partnership for a fundraising event.

At the Al and Malka Artists' Health Centre, proceeds from the Gala will be used to support the Joysanne Sidimus Subsidy Fund. This fund provides subsidies for eligible professional artists to be applied towards the cost of treatments at the Artists' Health Centre that are not covered by public or private health insurance plans. Additionally, proceeds will be used to fund research projects in artists health issues, and student education within the Artists' Health Centre.

In addition to providing leadership and support for programs and services at the Artists' Health Centre, the Artists' Health Centre Foundation offers education, advocacy, outreach and prevention services and resources to the professional artist community, as well as to students and staff in professional post secondary arts training programs.

Tafelmusik's long-term vision is to be a centre of musical excellence for generations to come. To realize this vision, Tafelmusik needs not only to grow today, but to prepare for the future. Proceeds from the Gala will be designated to support both current operating funding and Tafelmusik's $1.5 million Endowment Fund.
