Medical Breakthroughs Save Lives
For patients at high risk of esophageal cancer like Mr. Edgar Provis (pictured right), surgical removal of all or part of the esophagus has been standard treatment. But, Dr. Gail Darling, Thoracic Surgeon at Toronto General Hospital and Kress Family Chair in Esophageal Cancer at University Health Network, is hoping there’s a better way.
Mr. Provis is one of the first patients in Ontario to benefit from a breakthrough new treatment called Radiofrequency Ablation which uses electrical energy to destroy cancerous tissues. Dr. Darling is counting on her clinical trial to enable Mr. Provis’ esophagus to renew itself, avoiding the need for surgery altogether.
From promising new clinical trials, to Ontario's first cardiac stem cell transplant, every medical breakthrough featured in our spring edition of Report on Your Support was made possible through the generosity of caring hospital supporters like you.
