Shoulder and Elbow Reconstructive Surgery Clinical Fellowship

Duration: 1 year – Two 6 month rotations

Secondary Sites: Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Holland Orthopaedic and Arthritic Hospital (WSIB Shoulder and Elbow Subspecialty Assessment Clinic)

This clinical fellowship represents the opportunity for wide exposure to a subspecialty upper extremity surgical practice, allowing the clinical fellow to become familiar with both arthroscopic and open upper extremity reconstructive surgery of the shoulder, and elbow. The main educational sites will be St. Joseph’s Health Centre with Dr. Amr ElMaraghy and Toronto Western Hospital with Dr. Christian Veillette. Attendance at Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) subspecialty assessment clinics will occur up to four times per month at the Shoulder and Elbow clinics. The clinical fellow’s responsibilities will include assessment of emergency and fracture clinic patients, observation of office and specialty clinic evaluations, and assistance in the operating room. A minimal amount of time will be allocated to teach on-service surgical residents about general orthopaedic and specific upper extremity topics of interest. On-call responsibilities will be performed with the Supervisor and are not burdensome (1 in 5 home call at SJHC and 1 in 4 home call at TWH). Spare time will be used to read about observed cases, prepare presentations for rounds and complete a research project.
Goals and Objectives:
- Develop strong knowledge and understanding of common disease processes of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, including but not limited to; osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, instability, tendonopathy, trauma, and compressive neuropathy
- Demonstrate the ability to take a relevant history, perform a focused physical examination and establish a reasonable differential diagnosis
- Demonstrate the ability to order appropriate tests to confirm the diagnosis, propose an acceptable treatment plan incorporating both non-operative and operative modalities, and arrange follow-up with appropriate physical rehabilitation
- Demonstrate the ability to diagnose and treat possible complications
- Gain experience in the technical skills associated with the surgical management of upper extremity conditions including, but not limited to; joint replacement arthroplasty, open surgical reconstruction, stabilization, debridement, tendon release, joint arthrodesis and peripheral nerve decompression and/or transposition
- Complete a minimum of one clinical or basic science research project and prepare it for presentation and/or publication
The duties and activities of the Shoulder and Elbow Reconstructive Surgery Fellow and the surgical residents are not expected to overlap. The staff surgeon has the primary responsibility for patient care activity. Residents and Fellows will participate in assessments and surgery at the discretion of the staff surgeon and compatible with their experience and abilities.

Application Deadlines:
Application requirements should be received by September 1st in the year prior to the proposed start of the fellowship. The Shoulder and Elbow Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship begins July 1st annually.
