November 5, 2008 – Physician-in-Chief Appointment Celebration
On November 5, 2008 Dr. Michael Baker, University Health Network’s Physician-in-Chief of the last eighteen years, introduced Dr. John D. Parker as the incoming Physician-in-Chief. Dr. Parker is the Medical Director of the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, as well as the Head of the Division of Cardiology at Toronto General Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital. It was a bitter sweet occasion to see a legendary UHN figure pass on the torch to another great physician who will surely make medical leadership history. All staff, donors, and patients of University Health Network alike are eager to see Dr. Parker’s visions of the future of healthcare come to life.

October 28, 2008 – RBC Chair in Cardiovascular Nursing Research
On October 28, 2008 friends and family of Dr. Sean Clarke gathered to celebrate his appointment as the inaugural RBC Chair in Cardiovascular Nursing Research. The establishment of a unique nursing research chair in cardiovascular research at University Health Network will foster a “spirit of inquiry” and learning environment for professional nurses that will ultimately lead to enhanced care delivery for cardiovascular patients. Dr. Clarke’s work as the Chair will influence some key areas in the cardiovascular nursing field such as patient outcomes and the continuum of care, the examination of nurses clinical decision making, interdisciplinary team functioning and the outcomes of advanced practice nurses in various roles.

October 16, 2008 – Miriam L. Burnett Electrophysiology Fellowship
The establishment of the Miriam L. Burnett Electrophysiology Fellowship was celebrated on October 16, 2008. The entire Burnett family and W. Garfield Weston Foundation made the gift in tribute to the late Miriam Burnett, an avid supporter of the Electrophysiology program at Toronto General Hospital. This fellowship will provide resources to train the next generation of cardiac specialists in electrophysiology.

October 15, 2008 – Kress Family Professorship in Esophageal Cancer
On October 15, 2008 Dr. Gail Darling, Director of Clinical Research for Thoracic Surgery and associate professor of Thoracic Surgery at University of Toronto, was appointed the inaugural Kress Professor in Esophageal Cancer. This prestigious position was made possible by the incredible generosity of Ed and Paddy Kress and their family. Their generosity supports vital research initiatives in esophageal cancer while sustaining best practices and long-term development in the field of esophageal cancer.
