2008 – Training cardiac leaders of the future.

In any reflections related to the history and accomplishments of the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, Dr. Michael Sole is sure to figure prominently. In early 2008 it was announced that $1 million is being raised to establish a fellowship in cardiology in his name. The Dr. Michael J. Sole Fellowship in Cardiology will be offered to exceptional Canadian and international cardiologists, allowing them to share in the wealth of knowledge and expertise available at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre.

From 1989-1999, Dr. Sole was the Chief of Cardiology and the first director of the PMCC. He also founded and directed the Centre for Cardiovascular Research and the Heart and Stroke Richard Lewar Centre of Excellence in Cardiovascular Research at UHN and the University of Toronto. He has devoted his considerable research skills to the role of nutrition and sleep in cardiac health – areas that are often overlooked just because they are so rudimentary, he says. He recently published a study showing how chronic sleep disruption can cause heart and kidney disease. Earlier studies by Dr. Sole and his colleagues have suggested that renewal of cardiovascular tissues predominantly occurs during sleep, and therefore sleep interruption can directly damage organs.

“I am honoured that the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre is creating a fellowship in my name that will enable physicians to receive specialized training here,” says Dr. Sole.
