DID YOU KNOW?
60,000 new cases of dementia occur each year

Women are at a higher risk of developing AD

Alzheimer’s Disease Overview

Memory loss due to Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) or dementia is one of our greatest fears as we age. AD is a progressive degenerative disease characterized by a general decline in mental abilities involving memory, language and logical thinking.

At the Krembil Neuroscience Centre we are pursuing groundbreaking discoveries in Alzheimer’s research. Dr. Peter St Geoge-Hyslop, Director of the Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases, is a world-renowned expert on this disease and his pioneering work in the identification of genes causing inherited forms of Alzheimer's disease has had a profound influence in this field. In 2000, he identified a key protein involved in the degeneration of nerve cells in Alzheimer’s disease. This breakthrough discovery has set in motion the development of new drug therapies.

Researchers at the Krembil Neuroscience Centre are focused on the latest science to develop repair methods that will not only activate the brain’s own repair mechanisms, but will also use genetically modified cells and stem cells to restore normal function.

Research drives advances in patient care and donor support fuels research. With your support, we can invest in comprehensive studies to unlock the mysteries of Alzheimer’s Disease and develop better treatments. Your support will help give new hope to patients suffering from this devastating disease.

There’s always and answer. We’ll find it.

Support for research, including researchers, equipment and laboratory space, is needed to develop projects that may eventually halt and even reverse the destructive course of Alzheimer’s disease.
