Gaetano Geretto – a grateful champion
As a result of home renovations in late 2006, Gaetano Geretto was getting a nicer home, but with renovations came plaster dust, and with plaster dust, breathing problems. Upon visiting the ER at TGH, Gaetano, who is a strategic advisor to businesses, learned that he was functioning on only 27 per cent of his lung capacity.
However, after following up with Dr. Charles Chan, Head of Respirology at UHN, he was on the road to recovery. Less than 18 months later, he is now at 96 per cent lung capacity – and the situation is continuing to improve.
Recognizing the importance of Dr. Chan’s work, Gaetano is championing respirology efforts in the best way possible – by fundraising for them. “We need to get more awareness and support for COPD [Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease],” he says. “Especially now with environmental issues, respiratory diseases will be the major chronic illnesses in the twenty-first century – and especially for women and children.”
