Who was R. Fraser Elliott?

Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation (TG&WHF) lost a great champion when R.Fraser Elliott passed away at age 83 on January 26, 2005. Fraser Elliott was known to his friends and colleagues as an influential lawyer, businessman and philanthropist. He was also a dedicated and generous friend of Toronto General Hospital and Toronto Western Hospital.

As the first Chair of the TG&WHF Board of Directors, he oversaw the creation of the Foundation in 1986, after the merging of Toronto General Hospital with Toronto Western Hospital. After his term, Fraser remained as Chair Emeritus and a faithful volunteer of the Foundation. Most recently he served as Honorary Chair of the Transplant Campaign.

Fraser was also a generous donor, having established four endowed Chairs in Vascular Surgery, Transplantation Research, Cardiac Anaesthesia and Home Dialysis Research. The R. Fraser Elliott Building and the R. Fraser Elliott Emergency Centre at TGH were named in honour of a transformational gift he made in 2002.

R. Fraser Elliott epitomized leadership throughout his impressive career as well as through his long-term commitment and outstanding support of Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation. A Society bearing his name enables us to continue to actively honour his exceptional legacy — and our history — for years to come.
