The Future of Neuroscience: Krembil Discovery Centre
Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation recently completed the first phase of a successful campaign to support the building of the state-of-the-art Krembil Discovery Centre. The nine-storey, 300,000 square-feet Centre represents the future of neuroscience research and discovery in Canada.
With the completion of the Centre in 2012, UHN will be poised to become the national leader in advancing new treatments for age-related health care issues, particularly neurological and musculoskeletal diseases. These diseases, which include Alzheimer’s, dementia and arthritis, represent a significant health care burden for Canadians. Neuroscience-related diseases alone cost Canadians $35 billion annually. As our population ages, the demand for more effective strategies to care for patients suffering from these conditions will accelerate.
The next phase for the Centre will be to attract top clinicians, researchers and scientists to its collaborative multidisciplinary environment. Having all neuroscience-related programs located in one central high-tech facility will accelerate discovery and leverage the capabilities of new technology resources such as high resolution imaging equipment and a multi-functional surgical suite.
In addition to expanded space to accommodate interdisciplinary teams and new technology, the new Centre will foster greater community connection around Toronto Western Hospital, located in one of downtown Toronto’s most diverse and vibrant neighbourhoods. The Tower will also provide 50,000 square feet of space for an outpatient rehabilitation program.
