Innovations in Health Care Education
Health care professionals in remote, developing or under-resourced regions around the world can now more easily access advanced medical training at UHN thanks to the International Centre for Telesimulation and Innovation in Medical Education.
The telesimulation program was launched in 2008 to provide laparoscopic surgery training to physicians in developing countries around the world including Botswana, Jamaica, Colombia and Peru. Using low-cost telecommunications equipment and simulation technology, trainees learn the latest techniques in minimally invasive surgery. These techniques offer less risky options to open surgery and have a significant positive impact on patient outcomes.
Thanks to generous donor support, the program has now been expanded to include other urgently needed training programs and has become the first Centre of its kind in the world.
