Core Pancreatic Islet Lab for Diabetes Research campaign launched at TGH
August 7, 2007 – Holding the promise of a potential cure for diabetes, a $5 million fund-raising campaign has been launched to create a Core Pancreatic Islet Lab at Toronto General Hospital.
The main cause of diabetes is insufficient insulin production from pancreatic islet beta-cells (the cells that produce the vital hormone insulin) and improving the function of islets and islet transplantation are promising tactics for the treatment of diabetes and also the potential cure. The Core Islet Lab will specialize in the study of pancreatic insulin-producing cells in a multipurpose research facility, providing high-quality cell preparations for transplantation and facilitating the development and study of embryonic stem cells, which supply a constant source of insulin-producing beta cells.
